Henna is a plant based, temporary stain, not a permanent tattoo. There is no breaking of the skin, or pain involved. Henna is paste made from the lawsonia inermis plant. It has been used to color hair and stain the skin for centuries. The leaves are ground into a fine powder and it is mixed with lemon juice and oils. It is applied to the skin like cake decorating. Dried and wrapped, it is left on from 3 to 8 hours (the longer, the darker the stain). Henna is a chestnut brown or orangey stain. Henna is NOT BLACK. The pictures you see that appear black have the paste dried on the skin, when removed it leaves the orangey brown stain. So called "Black Henna" is not henna, but a chemical called PPD (Para-phenylenediamine) and can chemically burn and scar your skin. I do not use black henna. Because henna needs to remain on the skin for a long period, I prefer to apply henna late in the day. That way you can sleep with it on and it wont interfere with your daily activities. Once you remove the tape and clean the area with olive oil, off you go! I offer henna at the shop upon request, a few days advance notice is needed since I keep the henna paste frozen at home. Prices start at $10 for a small symbol. A design about the size of the palm of your hand is $20. I am available for "Henna Parties" for birthdays or bachelorette events upon request.
